2013: Lucky Number 13

Happy new year to you all. I hope this new year is filled with great moments that you will cherish for years to come. Be safe and warm this day. And remember this feeling of jubilation, reflection, and celebration. Remember this exact feeling because this is exactly how we are to live our lives not just on holidays, but each and every day.

I spent the evening sipping champagne at 6 pm with my friends Liz and Elizabeth, and then running the Emerald Nuts Midnight Runs in Central Park. There’s no greater feeling than starting 2013 with cocktails, fireworks, and a 4 mile PR. I have a feeling 2013 is going to be a good one. Lucky number 13.

Race Recap: Join The Voices 5 Miles

I always have a mix of emotions on Race Day: one part excitement with two parts laziness. Let’s be honest, I love running but on a cold, foggy Sunday morning after a long Saturday, the last thing I wanted to do was race. But it’s no surprise that afterwards, I’m always glad I did.

The Join the Voices 5 mile race supports the Voices Against Brain Cancer’s search for a cure. It was an uplifting day as runners and non-runners were out in honor of loved ones. Runners may not actually be the ones to find a cure for cancer one day, but our spirit of empathy and love is more powerful than medicine, test results, or doctors visits. We run because we wish we could fight the cancer for you! We run because running is the only way we know how to fight.

After watching the Kansas City Chiefs press conference and running yesterday, I’m reminded that we are our brothers and sisters’ keeper. Even when there is a cure for cancer, it means nothing if those folks don’t have a life worth living filled with love.

Make sure to love someone this week and think of them the next time you run. It will definitely fuel your workout.

Happy Monday!

The Calm Before and After the Storm

By now you’re probably tired of the post-Irene coverage in the news: the death toll, the photos of fallen trees and floods, how much the damage is costing various cities but I’ll leave you with one thought.

New Yorkers are infamous for being rude. For the record, we are not rude. We are highly misunderstood, busy, stressed, and tired. New Yorkers are respectful of each other’s time and space, so when something or someone infringes on either of the two we get a bit edgy. If you follow me on twitter (@gracekelle), you might have seen me tweet about this in the last week but I can’t stress it enough. Irene has brought peace to NYC. The hours leading up to the storm, New Yorkers making eye contact with one another, telling each other to “be safe”, walking gently and being polite. While the grocery stores were a bit frantic, people in general were ki

The difference? People were living with intention. With purpose. It was almost as if Irene was bringing the end of the earth.

I’m happy to report that the damage was not severe. We were in some respect spared and I feared that the city would go back to thinking that we were impervious to natural disaster and invincible. I am wrong. The city in the last few days has been still. Silent. People are going to work with a different attitude almost. Maybe it’s because the rain has washed away the dirt and grime- it’s a fresh start. Or maybe it’s because folks are out of town. Perhaps the potential catastrophe of Irene reminded New Yorkers of one September day ten years ago. People are living their lives with kindness, purpose and intention again.

I know this feeling won’t last long. But it reminds me that this is the way we are supposed to live every day. For me, weight loss has less to do with vanity than it does about living my life the way it was intended. For you, it may be your current job, a boyfriend, your city, your (lack of) money, or anything else. The point is that most of us are strolling along in life with excess fat or baggage and it is keep us from living life the way it was meant to be lived. LeanGirlsClub is about shedding whatever is keeping you heavy, whether it be weight or not.

Each day brings an Irene, a cleansing and a new beginning. Every day you wake up is another chance to live life with purpose, to make decisions with intention, and to be kind. If you can remind yourself of this every day somehow, you can weather any storm.

Hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday weekend.

How a Lean Girl Prepares for Hurricane Irene

Irene is a woman with a problem. I know girls can be catty and b*tchy but never did I expect a lady to ruin my weekend and put NYC on lockdown. Tomorrow I am expecting to run The Surival Race, a 12 obstacle course race in New Windsor, NY. It’s about 60 minutes north of NYC. There will be mud pits, fire pits, rope climbing, etc. My friends and I are super excited and have been training for this day. For Irene to come in and “rain” on our parade is quite nasty of her. So for now, we plan on going up there and coming right back before the storm is expected to hit our area.

As I said, Irene has the city on lockdown and in a scurry. People are emptying shelves at the stores and stocking up on the usual in-case-of-emergency goods: bottled water, canned goods, flash lights, etc. If you take a look a people’s grocery carts at the store, theirs are filled with high-sodium canned beans, chips, bread, and lots of non-perishable foods. Non-perishable in my mind screams highly processed, high in fat and sodium. Let it be known there are ways to stock up without having to buy all canned, boxed and bagged goods. Here’s my shopping/to-do list for Lean Girls preparing for Hurricane Irene:

  • Bottled Water
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Candles
  • Nuts (raw almonds and cashews)
  • Seeds (sunflower, pumpkin)
  • Fruit (apples, bananas, peaches)
  • Dried fruit (apples, apricots, raisins, etc)
  • carrots, radishes, turnips (root veggies that don’t have to be refridgerated)
  • Bread
  • almond butter
  • low sugar jelly
  • Oatmeal
  • Pre-make a big pot of brown rice
  • Beans (canned or pre-make from dried beans)
  • Chicken breasts (pre-make them before we lose power!)
  • Canned goods (soup, beans
  • Can opener
  • Wet Wipes
  • Bring in tomato plant
  • Take out trash before storm starts (last thing you want is a stinky home)
  • Fill tub with water (if you lose water, you can scoop the water in the tub to flush the toilet or drink)
  • charge cell phone (until we lose power)
  • Get cash
  • prepare important documents
  • first aid kit
  • utility knife
  • blanket
  • prepare a “GO” bag
