Taco Bell has been getting some heat lately and it’s not from the hot sauce. Ok, I couldn’t resist. An Alabama law firm Beasly, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles claims that Taco Bell is falsely advertising their “seasoned beef” because it’s only 36% beef. The lawsuit claims that the “beef” include water, wheat oats, soy lechitin, maltodextrin, anti-dusting agent and corn starch.
Taco Bell has fired back with its own lawsuit and stands by its beef. Greg Creed, the CEO of Taco Bell, issued a statement saying the company “buys beef from the same trusted brands you find in the supermarket, like Tyson Foods.”
I’m sure both sides are telling some form of the truth. My initial reaction was not “ewww, gross” but rather “are you surprised?” What do you expect to get for 99 cents? Let’s break it down. For a taco to retail for 99 cents, it must cost at max 50 cents for Taco to make that taco. Break it down to the taco shell, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and beef. And not that those items are equally valued, but that’s almost 10 cents per item. I don’t care that they’re buying in bulk. 10 cents for beef?
I could be completely incorrect with my calculations and probably am. I don’t do them to say that food should be more expensive (if anything good food should be affordable) but rather to get everyone to start THINKING about their food choices. Where did it come from? Who made it? Is it worth this amount? Can I make this or does it list ingredients that I can’t find at the grocery store?
When we think about our food choices, it becomes easier to make better decisions. It makes us want to eat whole foods, better foods that are good for our bodies. So as you sit there and debate between one dish over the other, start to ask questions! The answers to those questions will help you answer the biggest question of all – What should I eat?
